White Flight

How do copy editors not fix this stuff? Seriously.   You can see the web site here.  Perhaps the answer is that Branson, MO may not be the most culturally sensitive town in the US. That almost makes it funny. This is, after all, the same town where the name of vigilante group (Bald Knobbers) ended up being used for one the longest running comedy groups (Baldknobbers) in this “family friendly” version of Las Vegas.

How interesting that you would apply racial overtones to white butterflies?
hmmmm. I’m white and live a couple hundred miles from Branson. Maybe that’s my problem.

I live in the Ozarks and I’ve spent a lot of time in Christian County, MO. I don’t think this is so much an overtone as much as an example of no thinking about what sort of messages we send. Racism isn’t just about what things people do, but about how we think and whether or not we have the ability to look at how our actions from multiple contexts.

“White flight” is a term used for the Caucasian population moving to the suburbs to escape having to mix with other races in the city. Branson is also a terminally white, Christian town. Whoever made this brochure (and thanks for stealing my cool find, Justin) most likely did NOT notice this. That no one caught “white flight” as the header on an advert means they weren’t aware of the term.
